Steven Klein 1962 —

Klein's work for magazines and galleries is spontaneous and experimental and he provides his subjects with environments to improvise and perform within. Immense pictures of Madonna, who refers to the artist's work as 'little movies full of characters', adorn the walls of the gallery.

Steven Klein often creates complex and dark narratives in his portraits, including a 'family' sequence with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt in which they knowingly mock their perceived personas. He is widely acknowledged as one of the most subversive and transgressive of contemporary fashion photographers

Steven Klein has created some of the most memorable, iconic images of our time by subverting our notions of glamour, fame, and beauty-in the process exploding our expectations of contemporary photography.

In his celebrity portraiture, he creates collaborative, narrative epics that have transformed our understanding of his subjects (including Madonna, Brad Pitt, Prince, David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman, Hilary Swank, Usher, Pharrell, Pink and the Rolling Stones). In his alternately spare and lavish fashion images, he uses his painter's sense of composition and lighting to infuse the work of the world's leading designers with a thrilling, restless-and, often, more than a bit disturbing-edge. In his video installations, he's refined and heightened recurring visual subtexts that hint at sexual menace and a certain coiled, incendiary energy. And in all of his work, he functions most essentially as a storyteller-as a photographer with the instincts of a playwright, a filmmaker, a theater director, a performance artist.

As Klein has further blurred the boundaries between pop culture and fine art, he's increasingly had his work exhibited in museum and gallery solo exhibitions-most famously with "X-STaTIC PRO=CeSS," a video installation/collaboration with Madonna, first shown in 2003 at Deitch Projects in New York City (it's since traveled around the world), and most recently with his exhibition "Case Study #13," a 2005 collaboration with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. Klein's major museum triumph was the Winter of 2007 with his exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in  London. In terms of print sales Vered Gallery in East Hampton, has made him the hottest selling fashion photographer, selling more of his works in 12 months than all other galleries worldwide combined.

In blending pop culture with fine art, he's transformed magazines into ad hoc gallery spaces, radically reimagining the role of fashion and celebrity photography in the public sphere. Among the magazines that have published his images, often in massive, uninterrupted cinematic portfolios that can number in the dozens of pages: American Vogue, L'Uomo Vogue, W, and Arena Hommes+. Notably, when Klein's first Brad Pitt portfolio for W appeared in the summer of 1999, Village Voice photography critic Vince Aletti cited it as one of the must-see exhibitions of the season. Today, the publication of Klein 'portfolios' are often regarded as signal "events" that electrify the fashion and art worlds, as well as mass audiences.

Klein formally trained as a painter at the Rhode Island School of Design, and formally began his photography career in Paris with a commission from Dior. Since then, he's been sought out by designers including Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford, and Dolce & Gabbana.

He lives and works in New York City.
