Lili Almog 1961 —
Biography
Lili Almog (b. 1961)
Lili Almog moved from Israel to New York in the mid 80's and started her photography career working as a photojournalist for several international news publications focusing primarily on fashion and portraiture. Simultaneously, Lili Almog developed her art vision and graduated with honors from The School of Visual Arts in 1992. During the past ten years her artistic efforts focused on creating representations of the feminine body and psyche in an attempt to capture objectively the state of spiritual and cultural identity among women influenced by western culture (Bed sequence 2002, Perfect Intimacy 2006 and The other Half of the sky 2009).
More recent work (Between Presence and Absence 2012) and in her present exhibition at Vered Gallery, East Hampton NY 2014, "Down to Earth", her focus shifted from social behavior to traces of human activity in landscape and including sculptures and video.
Almog's first video was made at the site of the Carmel Fire, commemorating its one year anniversary.
The fire destroyed large parts of the Carmel Hai-Bar Nature Reserve, one of the largest forests in Israel. Many 250 homes were destroyed or severely damaged, 17,000 people were forced to evacuate, more than 12,000 acres were burned and an estimated 5 million trees were lost in the fire. 44 people died.
Below is a link to the 25 minute video. The overwhelming vision, the poetic movement accentuated by its original score, sear the reality of the tragedy into ones mind.
It was the process of looking at the fire scared landscape accelerated Almog's move from purely figurative interests, to concerns about land and land usage that resulted in "DOWN TO EARTH" Almog's exploration of land and land's usage, principally - it's pleasurable usage, as in sports fields: flight, baseball and golf courses.
