ALVIN LANGDON COBURN: MODERNIST & MYSTIC
13th December 2014 - 15th February 2015

Alvin Langdon Coburn (1882-1966), a photographer from the age of eight years old, was a perfectionist and an innate craftsman. He mastered the complexities of platinum and gum platinum printing and the autochrome colour process from 1900-1907 before learning the photogravure process from 1906-1909. Working with his own printing press, he produced several landmark publications, London, New York, Men of Mark marrying text and images. A pictorialist, a symbolist, an innovator, he was the first modernist and abstract photographer taking photography in exhilarating new directions about which he also wrote eloquently.

Fundacion MAPFRE has always paid particular attention to collecting and preserving works on paper, which are the first and most genuine inspiration of an artist. The more than two thousand drawings of the collection include works by Pablo Picasso, Gustav Klimt, Kurt Schwitters, Henri Matisse and Egon Schiele. The incorporation of photography in these collections of work on paper in 2007, was essential bearing in mind its importance as the language of the 20th century and its unique ability to document and capture reality. The collection now has over 700 works by 25 masterphotographers such as Walker Evans, Paul Strand or Eugène Atget.
